Introducing the National Award Winning Film "Baga Beach".

SYNOPSIS

The film “Baga Beach “, is a camouflage in motion, exploring struggles of people living on the coastal belt of Goa.

The film Baga Beach aims to expose the buried facts of the most attractive tourist destination of India, “Goa”. Produced by DR Pramod Salgaocar under the banner Sharvani Productions and directed by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar, the film showcases the cases of pedophilia in the state of Goa and its detrimental effects on the locals of Goa.

BAGA  BEACH   presents how the tourists, the locals and the migrants are interdependent economically, emotionally and socially.  How they perceive these complex unequal relationships and how they finally come to terms with it. Rather forced to live it for better or for worse! BAGA BEACH attempts to create awareness regarding issues related to tourism through 6 characters whose lives are inextricably and inexplicably intertwined!
 
The film Baga Beach gives an insight on the relationship between the tourists and the locals in Goa. The film deals with certain aspects of Goa like, the tourists get along with the locals and take their undue advantage, and they lure the children and exploit them. This makes Goa the worst in child related crimes. The film further showcases that the family is equally responsible in a way, to further aid the exploitation of children. The film depicts different scenario existing in Goa through four heart wrenching stories. One of a Goan families who have a German as a paying guest who exploits the kids, second of a south Indian man who wants to be a lifeguard, third of a bead seller who falls in love with a French tourist and fourth of an orphan who works as a masseur on the beaches and is being used by his uncle for income.




Five teenagers struggle to live in the commercialized world in the backdrop of Goan tourism. Their dreams and aspirations will change forever after one of them will be subjected to sexual abuse.Five teenagers struggle to live in the commercialized world in the backdrop of Goan tourism. Making a film on such a sensitive topic the producer DR Pramod Salgaocar says, “I believe in human rights, especially the rights of the women and children, and there is a need to create an environment in which they can enjoy. In an international tourist destination Goa, the locals, migrants and tourists mingle with each other and impact each others lives in different ways.” She further adds, “Through Baga Beach, I wanted to create an awareness regarding these complex issues.”






 

The film follows 4 different stories that brings the essence of the story

A Goan family who have a German as a paying guest, A south India Boy who wants to be a lifeguard on the beach- his triumphs of acceptance,  A young bead seller girl who falls in love with French tourist, A ten year old beach masseur and his tryst with tourists. 
 
 





The Film Baga Beach is produced by Dr Pramod Salgaoncar under the banner Sharvani Productions and is directed by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar who has also done a feature film, Paltadaco Munis (The Man beyond the Bridge) in Konkani language. The film stars Paoli Dam, Jean Denis Romer, Cedric Cirotteau, Sadia Siddiqui, Akash Sinha, Sergie Klemov, Prashanti Talpankar, Pradeep Naik, Ivon De’souza, Abhishek Vishwakarma and Rajesh Karekar.
 

 



BAGA BEACH was screened at the 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI)

Speaking to reporters after the screening of the film at the 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), director Laxmikant Shetgaonkar, a local here, also said that the film is packed with real references. "I have been researching this film for nearly three years. I spoke to a lot of stakeholders like beach shack helpers and child rights activists. Their stories and experiences are a part of the film," Shetgaonkar said.
The director said the film mirrors the realities on most tourist-frequented beaches of Goa, and that Baga Beach was a metaphor for just about any beach and coastal community in the state.
 


 
 
 
The film ‘Baga Beach’ recently won the Best Konkani Film award at 61st National Film Awards.
 
 
 


 
Producer's Profile:  Sharvani Productions
Dr Pramod Salgaocar. Sociopolitical activist having been involved in women rights activism and strong supporter of political reservation for women and has worked as Chairperson of State Commission for Women for nine years(three terms).Professionally she is a medical doctor,and presently working as Director Medical services and HR. She has produced, under the banner of Sharvani Productions, tv serial WOMEN IN GOA, and a full length marathi feature film MAREPARYANT FASHI. 






Dr Sagar salgaocar, an orthopedic surgeon by profession, is working with the production house Sharvani Productions,as an associate producer.

Belief in the film: The producers believe in human rights, especially the rights of the women and children, and the need to create an environment in which they can be enjoyed. In an international tourist destination Goa, the locals and the migrants and the domestic and international tourists mingle with each other and impact each others lives in so many different ways. Through Baga Beach,the producers wanted to create an awareness regarding these complex issues.

The vision of our director Laxmikant,the highly creative DOP Arup Mondal,the highly efficient art direction team led by Abhijeet, the highly motivated production team led by Harsh Chowdhary, all of these taught us a lot in terms of commitment towards a common goal.



Directors profile: Laxmikant Shetgaonkar
Laxmikant Shetgaonkar, born and brought up in Goa, started his film career with A SEA SIDE STORY, a 45 minute short film which won the national award for best debut non feature film and Golden Conch for best fiction film at Mumbai International Film Festival in 2004. His first feature film, PALTADACHO MUNIS, (The man beyond the bridge),in Konkani language,received FIBRESCI prize at Toronto International Film Festival 2009,and Grand Jury prize for best film at IFFLA IN 2010. The film was extensively screened at important international film festivals like Berlin(forum), Palm springs,CAIRO,Istanbul,IFFI,MAMI etc. Baga beach is his second feature film.
